7 Natural Remedies for your Vagina

I always tell my clients: “The health of your vagina leads to the happiness of your vagina.” Just think about the times you have felt dis-ease, discomfort or pain ‘down there’ – it affects everything in your life, right?! From your arousal levels, the way you sit or walk, what you wear, what you can eat and how enjoyable sex is.

Your vagina speaks to you through her smell, taste, appearance, discharge and discretion. If you consume too much acidic food or drink, such as meat, dairy, coffee or alcohol, your vagina will express her distaste for that acidity. Doing a taste or sniff test every day is a good start to getting to know your vagina.

If you have a high maintenance vagina (like myself) and have tried every antibiotic and pharmaceutical under the sun to heal issues such as thrush, bacterial vaginosis, vaginismus, vulvadynia or UTIs, it’s time to turn to Mother Nature for healing, alongside assessing your diet, your emotions, sexual trauma and overall love & connection to your vagina.

So here are some of my own trialled and tested natural remedies to healing your vagina:

1. Garlic clove inside the vagina

This is my go-to natural solution if I have yeast infection or Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) symptoms. Garlic is a natural anti-inflammatory and kills yeast, thus can help heal the symptoms of thrust/yeast infection (itching, sore, cottage cheese texture discharge) or BV (foul smell, itchiness). All you have to do is insert a clove of garlic with the skin removed inside the vagina. Leave in there overnight and remove it in the morning by inserting a finger and scooping it out. You can always thread a piece of string through the garlic so you can retrieve it (like a tampon).

2. Apple cider vinegar bath

Apple cider vinegar is a mutli-purposeful natural remedy. By adding one cup of apple cider to your bath water (do not add bubble bath or soap!), the water will gently soak inside and outside your vagina, assisting with levelling out your pH levels. Also drinking a nip of apple cider in the morning will help alkaline the body, in turn alkalising your vagina too. Apple Cider Vinegar, when soaked in a tampon and used on the walls of a woman vagina it can help to reduce irritation and any itching that is caused by yeast infections. Vinegar can keep your vagina clean, fresh, smelling great and free of infection. The good thing about this option is that it can help tighten your vagina walls too. The douching solution works by restoring the elasticity and tightness of the vagina and also to control your vagina’s pH levels as well as infections.

3. Yoghurt soaked tampon

Yogurt can be applied to the surface of the vulva or placed inside the vagina (on an organic tampon) to help restore a heathy yeast balance inside the vagina. Yogurt has live natural micro-organisms and is an effective remedy because it contains Lactobacillus, a type of bacteria that lives in the gut, urinary tract, and vagina. Lactobacillus releases hydrogen peroxide, which kills Candida, combatting the yeast infection.

To heal yeast infection symptoms it is important to use plain, natural yogurt (vegan is best and no natural sweeteners!). Soak an organic cotton tampon in yoghurt and insert for a few hours. You can also make a frozen yoghurt paddle pop and insert it into the vagina (frozen). Just make sure you wear a pad as it will gradually melt into your undies. This is ultra soothing and cooling for the yoni.

A healthy gut = a healthy vagina! For ultimate healthy vaginal flora, taking an oral probiotic every day is best practice for prevention. If you have had a thrush flare up, inserting a probiotic tablet inside your vagina may also help. Please consult your GP to check your brand of probiotic can be used internally.

4. Yoni Steaming

A monthly or quarterly yoni steam can be a meditative and deeply cleansing practice for your vagina. If you suffer with vulvadynia or vaginismus, which is essentially a build up of chronic pussy tension, it’s key to relax and soften the vaginal muscles. One way of doing that is steaming your pussy – like a facial, but for your vagina. By squatting over a blend of special organic herbs diffusing in boiling hot water, the steam can help to relax and melt away the tension and 30 minutes is all you need. You can either squat over the bowl on the floor with a towel over your lap, place the bowl inside the toilet and sit over it or find a camping toilet chair with a whole in it. It is suggested not to practice yoni steam if you have an IUD as it can soften the cervix and dislodge the IUD. We sell an organic sensual blend of Australia yoni steam herbs here.

5. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is a natural anti-fungal and incredibly healing for candida or thrush, as well as other skin or hair conditions. Adding a couple of drops of tea tree oil to a tampon is one of the most quickest and efficient ways to ease infection symptoms. A little goes a long way, so only add 3-5 drops of tea tree oil into a half a cup of water, soak the tampon and then insert for 2-3 hours then remove. Repeat twice a day until the infection clears.

6. The Secret Ceres herbal stick

I discovered the Secret Ceres Wand a few years ago when I wanted to feel ‘tighter’ for my partner. Upon further research I discovered that the wand is actually really beneficial for your vaginal pH health and stimulates a natural cleansing process. Hailing as an ancient practice from Asia where women would use the herbs to naturally cleanse and tighten the vagina, the Secret Ceres is made up of ingredients such as Punica Granatum (pomegranate tree), Drip Stones (Crystals) and Kaolin (porcelain clay), which naturally make the vagina shed a layer of skin – both causing it to release a build up of toxins, and also create a snugger fit for penetration. The wand is designed to be held inside the vagina for only 90 seconds. It may tingle if you have an infection like thrush or BV, however it shouldn’t tingle if your vagina is in good health. It’s not dissimilar to yoni pearls which are inserted inside the vagina to stimulate a cleansing process. You can grab one here for $220 AUD and it lasts years!

7. Go cotton or go without

My mother would always tell me to wear loose cotton undies, rather than nylon, so my vagina could breathe and heal. Making sure your underwear is made of cotton or organic bamboo, or going without underwear completely (particularly at night time) will ensure your yoni can breathe. Avoid wearing yoga tights too regularly, and wear loose skirts or flowing dresses if your vagina starts to tingle or show symptoms of thrush. Let her breathe!

Sticking to a low-sugar, low-carb diet during your yeast infection and recovery is key as candida thrives off sugar and carbs.

Too many women are walking around with dis-ease and discomfort, and they don’t have to be.

A depressed vagina is an unhealthy vagina, all she needs is some TLC, some natural remedies and LOVE. I hope this information is helpful for you!
